Merde is a ballet thing. It means "shit" in French and it's what you say to a dancer to wish him/her well before a performance. You don't say "good luck" or "break a leg" (this is actually bad luck), you say "merde".
It's OK to wear profanity to the office as long as it's in a foreign language, right?
