I'm not just wearing cupcakes on my breasts so people can make inappropriate jokes (they did), I also happen to love cupcakes. Big. Time.
I went through a cupcake-obsession a few years ago. I still love cupcakes, but I now do not follow cupcake trucks on Facebook and run out to get one on an almost daily basis. (Seriously, I was sick.) So, here are my reviews of the cupcakes I've tried that are available downtown.
More - Actually never tried them. They have a truck that I see every now and then, but it's usually in the morning and I can't do breakfast cupcakes.
Cupcake Counter - Good, solid (not literally) cupcake. If you can get the PB&J, do it. You'll thank me.
Crumbs - The absolute worst cupcake I've ever had. The cake is dense and dry and the frosting is pure sugar; it makes your teeth ache. A lot of people like these cupcakes, but I think they must have terrible taste. I've actually thrown away a half of a MINI cupcake because it was so bad, I wouldn't even take one more bite.
Magnolia Bakery - The best I've found in the downtown area. The shop is super cute. The cake is pretty moist and the frosting has a nice flavor and texture - not too heavy, not too sweet. Their carrot cake is to die for. I think it's the best I've had. I haven't tried their pies yet, but they look amazing.
Sugar Bliss - When I started working downtown, I thought Sugar Bliss was the shit. Having tried other bakeries, I have now changed my mind. This cupcake is decent, but the frosting is too sweet for me and the cake isn't the greatest. It's better than Crumbs, though.
Cupcake Gallery - The Cupcake Gallery is now closed, but they had the best cupcakes in all the land. The cake was moist and the frosting was light, but flavorful. They had amazing flavors too, like "fluffernutter" - peanut butter and marshmallow fluff.
